Although the basic functions of “timing belt” and “timing chain” are the same, their working principle is still different.
There are many rubber teeth on the inner side of the timing belt. The timing belt uses these rubber teeth to cooperate with the groove on the top of the corresponding rotating parts (camshaft, water pump, etc.), so that the engine crankshaft can pull other running parts and keep the driven parts running synchronously. The timing belt can be regarded as a soft gear. Compared with the timing chain, the timing belt has the characteristics of simple structure, no lubrication, quiet operation, convenient installation and maintenance, low manufacturing cost and so on. However, the timing belt is a rubber (hydrogenated butadiene rubber) component. With the increase of engine working time, the timing belt will be worn and aged.
